Since 2001, ICM Associates has been working with clients and their families at all stages of recovery. As one of the first companies to offer clinically facilitated family interventions, we have two decades of experience providing hands on guidance and specialty support to thousands.
We recognize the inherent value of strong family relationships in the context of addiction and mental health recovery, and that families can and do recover. We also understand that when addiction and mental health difficulties impact a family, individuals and the entire family system face what could feel like insurmountable challenges. Trust can be hard to reestablish, effective communication can become problematic, and day to day functioning can be compromised. If left untreated, optimal relationships within the family system may feel like a daunting challenge. But, it does not have to be.
After years of experience we have come to realize that families motivated for change and growth may find their options for professional guidance limited. Though 12-step and similar peer support groups are available world wide, family members may feel reluctant to attend. Family therapy can be an avenue for many, though at times can feel like a daunting task, and often family members reside in different geographic areas which can make participating in family therapy challenging, if not impossible.
However, family systems and members continue to need support, guidance, and counsel. ICM Associates has developed an innovative Family Coaching Program to meet the needs of motivated families who desire to proactively pursue healthy recovery.
Regardless of the starting point of the family, whether this is the first experience with recovery efforts or veterans of family work, all family systems can benefit from the guided expertise of an ICM Family Coach. Each family system embarks upon the Family Coaching Plan with their collective and specific needs as the primary focus. Plans are individually and completely customized.
The Family Coaching Service developed by ICM founder, Kate Caravella, is a targeted, organized, and family focused service with the intentional purpose of helping families navigate the ins and outs of family recovery.
Family Coaching IS:
- A service that is customized to the very specific needs of the family system as a whole.
- A creative and innovative approach that provides families with the skills to navigate recovery.
- Structured and focused meeting formats which include elements of education, skills training, and support.
- An option for families who may be unable, or not yet ready to participate in family therapy or peer groups.
- An extension of services at the individual level for those who may have participated in a formal family program.
- A shorter term service designed to establish a foundation for family wellness and relationship strengthening.
Family Coaching is NOT:
- Family therapy or counseling (though the family or family therapist may use it in conjunction with).
- Intended to be a replacement of needed family counseling or therapy, or for individual therapy as needed.
- Crisis counseling.
- A multi-family or group experience.
The only prerequisite for Family Coaching is a family system's desire to strengthen their relationships, support each other, learn how to effectively manage challenge areas, and continue to grow. Some family systems may have a great deal of experience and a long history of challenges, while some may just be starting their path towards recovery, and others may simply be in need of a bit more targeted support. Regardless of where a particular family is along the spectrum, Family Coaching can assist in mobilizing effective change.

Coaching sessions are designed around the specific and unique needs of each family. To achieve this customization, our coaching professionals collect pertinent family history. Through individualized assessments, we identify the family strengths and evaluate challenge areas. If a family therapist or other professional has referred the family or is involved in their care, and an invitation to collaborate will be extended.
Each family will be matched to an ICM Family Coach. Matching considerations include Coach availability, Coach areas of expertise, the family’s desired coaching frequency and day/time preferences.
Initial family coaching occurs over a period of six coaching sessions. Coaching sessions are one hour in length, follow a structured format, have a specific topic, and build upon each other. Coaching sessions are facilitated by the designated Family Coach and are designed to include time for immediate problem solving/open discussion, topic specific education, topic discussion, and family/coach feedback.
